SCN: 5406 — FlashDoctor; Uses new modern compiler

FlashDoctor was moved from Borland C++Builder 5 to Embarcadero C++Builder 12. The program does the same job as before. It is now built with a compiler that runs on a current Windows machine, where the old compiler only ran on Windows 7. The program itself ran on any Windows version before and still does. It is now one standalone file, it has a few fixes, and it has one new feature: a menu for choosing the look of the program.

Why: the old compiler only ran on Windows 7, so changes to FlashDoctor required a Windows 7 virtual machine to build. The new build had a few problems along the way, and they were fixed as part of this change.

What changed for users:

  • The open file dialog starts in N:\Production\XL200 and lists hex files again.
  • The default application type is XL200 Version 5.
  • There is a new Options > Theme menu with 13 looks to choose from. The choice is remembered for next time. A theme changes colours and styling only, not behaviour.
  • The progress bar looks the way it did in the old version.
  • The red cross icon is used for the program and its taskbar button.
  • The program is one standalone file and needs none of the old Borland DLLs.

What did not change: the hex and Motorola S-record handling, the checksums, dates, bit codes, serial number handling, the output file formats and the Config*.fdc files are untouched.

Changes under the hood:

  • The project file changed from FlashDoctor.bpr to FlashDoctor.cbproj.
  • The new compiler treats text differently. Code that passed text from the screen to C file functions was updated in FileOptions.cpp and MainForm.cpp, and the message boxes were updated too.
  • The program is built into the project folder, as before, instead of a subfolder.
  • The program is linked into one file with no runtime packages. This also fixed a crash caused by the old BORLNDMM.DLL in the project folder being loaded instead of the correct one.

Notes and risks:

  • File and serial number text now passes through a plain-text conversion. Non-English characters in file names or serial numbers could be handled differently from before.
  • BORLNDMM.DLL, CC3250MT.DLL and VCL50.BPL are no longer used by the new program. The old program version in production still needs them, so do not remove them from the production folder.
  • The theme list is set in the project settings. Adding or removing a theme means rebuilding the program.
